Select artworks from Nigerian artist Njideka Akunyili:

“Nigeria is almost a third character in my work,” she said. “A lot of my work is about investigating my love for Nigeria and my life in America.

“I met my husband at college and there was some anxiety that if I married outside my culture I would lose my identity, but there is a space in my work where these things come together.”

Akunyili is hoping to help change attitudes to art in Nigeria, where she said appreciation is growing slowly.

“If I hadn’t left Nigeria, I wouldn’t be an artist, I would be a doctor,” she said. “When I told my parents I wanted to be an artist, they couldn’t get their heads around why an educated person who went to college in America would want to be an artist.

“If people think of artists, it’s somebody by the side of the road painting signs.”

    […]

“When I was young, the less Nigerian you were the cooler you were, but now we have gone back to tradition,” said Akunyili. “There’s a nice energy about the country that’s finally coming into its own.”

This is a tale of a hopeless romantic or is it helpless ( doesn’t matter all romance is helplessly hopeless.)
She’s a women with great intelligence but like so many people have a overly romanticized idea of love. To get a better jest of her ideas on the topic at hand revealing her early experiences with traditional religion plays a large role in her fantasized realities & shows her inabilities to accept that human beings don’t behave in such likeness that she’d like to believe. So yet even escaping such opposing ideas to human nature, she continues to struggle with the residue its left behind. The self denial, lack of love, abandonment & fear, fear that without enough self sacrifice there will be too much self & to be consumed in oneself is to make said consumption against the laws of God & be seen as self worship. Its all really complex you know so understand her overthinking process.

I give up its hopeless trying to explain her concepts around love, a confused mess I am because me & her are one in the same.

    I am being tried.

The Universe never lets me forget where I came from and God refuses to allow me to forget who is in charge. There are so many people from my past trying to stay relevant in my life—people who in my heart I don’t want in my space.

Deep down I know that many people just want me…
